- When one faces one's orals (and other hurdles) with a health level of terror,
- knowing that the process will be rigorous, one is more likely to show their
- identity as flower or weed. I spoke to Roger Fouts (Prof at CWU, Primate
- Center, working with signing Chimpanzes) one day about his final orals. He
- that he had been doing quite well, but they seemed endless. One particular
- member of the committee was brutal, but Roger was up to the task. Until...
- he was asked a very simple question and his mind went blank. He sat there
- looking at the committee, like he was a lizard on a rock. Finally this
- "brutal" committee member offer a "suggestion" which slapped Roger back into
- reality and he was able to continue. When it was all complete, and Roger had
- passed, this committee member came to him and shook his hand and said. "Thank
- you, Roger, for letting me be a Dragon at the Gate." Utimately, this is where
- we show that we are, in fact, prepared. If the process is respected. I just
- have to have faith that happens.
