- Spring semester isn't far away, and I'm still looking from an inexpensive (under
- $15.00) text which lays out Unix basics in clear, user-friendly prose. I've
- seen
- Douglas Topham's "The First Book of Unix" (1991) listed in the LCIS catalog, but
- several major libraries I've telnetted to don't include this book in their
- collections, so I can't identify the publisher. It would sure be nice to find
- a cheap book for my technical writing sections that would allow students to get
- functioning right away with using mail, changing directories, and the like.
-
- I'm looking for a cheap Unix primer because my technical writing courses are
- based on using the Internet, and I've found that Tracey LaQuey's _Internet
- Companion_ is an inexpensive way to introduce students to Internet resources,
- but it contains only minimal exposure to Unix itself. A combined Internet and
- Unix book would be ideal, but I've only seen Ed Krol's _Whole Internet Guide_
- which seems to bury the Unix instruction, for my purposes, under layers of
- qualifying detail, well into the body of the book itself. Because of my course
- focus on writing and information research in the networked environment, the
- credibility of the course on my campus can't involve too indirect a grounding
- in "necessary background material" before the hands-on stuff is presented. If
- possible, I'd like to keep the student expense under $30.00 for one or two
- books. Any suggestions would be appreciated...and acted on immediately.
