- Adding to Hugh Agnew's selections:
-
- Books: Bohumil Hrabal is one of the most interesting Czech writers, and
- some of his books are available in English. I read parts of Paul Wilson's
- translation of his "I served the King of England" and it was very good.
- I think "Too loud a solitude" also came out in English.
- I doubt Jakub Deml has has been translated; he's a remarkable persona,
- very unusual stuff, somewhat mystical (he was a Catholic priest).
- Vladimir Paral is rather famous; I have read most of his stuff
- but "Lovers and murderers" is the best (I don't think it's been
- translated). And then Capek, of course. "The War with the Newts" is
- available in English. I like everything he's written.
-
- Of the contemporary Slovak writers I like Dusan Mitana.
- I absolutely loved a book called
- "Rivers of Babylon" by Peter Pis't'anek (the title is in English, the
- book is in Slovak); came out in 1990 or 1991.
-
-
- Films: Just about any by Forman: Loves of one Blonde, Black Peter, etc;
- Ivo Passer's films (I don't recall any titles). Ve'ra Chytilova is
- quite famous, although I never developed taste for her films. Then there
- is a handful of great films about the medieval ages; I don't recall
- the names, perhaps someone else can remember. Menzel's "My little
- Village" (Dedinka ma strediskova) is a mildly pale but recognizable
- portrayal of the eighties.
-
- Of the Slovak directors,
- Jakubisko is the most famous; "Same age as Christ" ("Kristove roky")
- comes to mind. The film "Shops Downtown" (Obchody na Korze) is a must.
