- We've been using Silver Platter products for the past two or three years
- and have been very satisfied. Their customer support has been prompt and
- accurate. I've worked in particular with Tom Manganaro and Patty Harper
- and have been very happy with the service. Patty even came from
- California back east to set up training sessions for local SP users.
-
- We use PaperChase for MEDLINE (naturally; I recommend PaperChase highly as
- well), but we've tried to standardize (as much as possible) on a user
- interface for other local databases. We settled on Silver Platter for
- PSYCLIT and CINAHL, because they were easy to teach, had plenty of
- on-screen help, and have been (for us at least) relatively trouble-free.
-
- We run both these products on a NetWare 3.11 network, using CBIS CD
- Connection software (ver 2.20C). Because we are on the hospital backbone
- network, these databases are available from any of the 40-odd other
- hospital LANs with access to the backbone. We don't do dial-up, yet.
-
- Disadvantages? Because of all the help on-screen, the screens can look a
- little busy. It's a tradeoff we don't mind making. Like many other
- CD-ROM products, SP uses temporary spill files to store data: these need
- to be managed to a RAM disk or some other local arrangement in order to
- preserve access speed and reduce traffic over the wire. In the past, we
- would occasionally have a system lock up during a _very_ large search or
- print operation (memory-related, I think), but this hasn't happened
- recently, so it might have been a glitch that's been fixed.
-
- In all, we're happy.
