  14. In brief reply to your correction of my facile writing-off
  15. conferencing.  I was, as you note, referring only to the
  16. classroom situation--and am still ready to reconsider conferencing
  17. in the classroom.  I know that students make tremendous gains
  18. when you can sit down with them in a one-on-one situation with
  19. no time schedule attached.  The writing centers, I am sure,
  20. supply the kind of individual attention writers frequently need.
  21. Wish we had one here.  You of course know the problems with
  22. starting one.  I think I was perhaps suggesting a rethinking
  23. of the conferencing strategy as a necessary part of the
  24. classroom.
