  15. On Writing Project sites being the most effective link between college
  16. and public schools:

  18. You are right--effective, useful, and hard work.  I have started two
  19. NWP sites, one in Mississippi and one in Alabama.  Although I have had
  20. faculty appointments inEnglish, the department doesn't care to know that
  21. the site exists or that the link is effective.  I am always scrounging
  22. for $ to keep the thing operational and always criticized for spending
  23. too much time in the public schools and too little time teaching
  24. classes.  No matter that I bring in more external funding than the cost
  25. of my released time, the bottom line is STUDETN CREDIT HOURS GENERATED!
  26. And, in the department, of course, literature reigns over comp/rhet.

  28. My wife nearly divorced me when I started the 2nd writing project site,
  29. barely a year after my first heart atack and a month before my second.
  30.  
  31. Still, the writing project work is the most important thing I've done &
  32. and the most effective teaching I've ever been involved in.
