  14. Our program encourages collaborative learning, group work, lots of student
  15. input into developing the goals and evaluation criteria for writing
  16. assignments. One big TA training hurdle is to help TAs overcome the models of
  17. teaching (teacher centered lecture-discussion) that they know best and to
  18. adopt student centered methods wherein the teacher attempts to create learning
  19. experiences for students (ala Hillocks et al.). Teachers have to learn how to
  20. get students to engage with the course AND WITH EACH OTHER. The kind of
  21. learning that goes on outseide of class (collaborative) is not, for students,
  22. the norm inside of class, and bringing inside and outside togther is hard for
  23. both students and teachers.
