  14. I agree, John, that graduate students can produce great stuff. But don't
  15. neglect the context that you have created for them. The Daedalus group did't
  16. produce their stuff when they were new grad students; it came out of their
  17. learning and experience in your program. Our grad students come up with good
  18. ideas all the time, but I think they do so because they are working within
  19. (and against) a structured context. They are not just drifting about. I think
  20. we do liberate people by confining them, but maybe that's just my 18th century
  21. background rearing its pre-romantic head.
