  20. Precisely the problem: we can only envision/formulate the problem of
  21. teaching writing to large numbers of students (sometimes called people)
  22. by adopting the factory method of production and standardization of product.
  23. Now we are back to Henry Taylor and the new software I saw enthusiastically
  24. praised by this morning's Wall STreet Journal (why do they like to be called
  25. Wall Street, do you suppose?), ManagePro.
  26. The trick is to release energies, to enlarge the individuality of our studeents
  27. (sometimes called people) and that of the people who teach them; we do not
  28. enlarge people by confining them.
  29. Some TAs, poor souls, would rather teach literature; I suppose that is outside
  30. the boundaries of our genres?  Literature is not about writing?  Writing even
  31. a memo is not committing the sin of literature?
  32. How do you set up the boundaries of our boxes (tacky little boxes we sang in
  33. the 60s, those of us that could sing) to free people whose skills have been
  34. confined in boxes since kindergarten, in the interests of comparability,
  35. standardization, so we can all do the same kinds of equations in our heads
  36. as we stuff plastic peanuts into cartons when we graduate.

  38. There is something we must do that is important than teaching "correctness"
  39. or writing technical reports.  I do not hear enough about that.
  40.
