  15. I think contradictory things about conferences/tutorials.  Still
  16. don't know where I stand.  I know that students will gain from
  17. the kind of close reading/tutorial you describe.  I also know
  18. they will get more from me if I have the time to really sit
  19. down with them an go over each paper in this fashion.  But
  20. institutionally, such a scheme is unworkable.  Maybe its
  21. unworkability convinced me it might not even be desirable.
  22.   At any rate, I no longer hold conferences.  I found myself
  23. pressed for time and telling my students what to write--not
  24. a good way to do it, I know.  Maybe I'm just accepting a
  25. fallen world.  At any rate, I now push my students to learn
  26. how to help each other.  I remember (as I am sure all of us
  27. do) that when I learned most was when I taught.
