  16. The University of California at Riverside (UCR) Library has created and
  17. been maintaining an electronic item number and SuDoc class database since
  18. 1985.  (See Readers Exchange article in Administrative Notes, Nov. 1986.)
  19.  
  20. The database is created with dBASE software and presently contains 13,042
  21. records.  Each record in the database represents a SuDoc class available for
  22. selection with its associated information such as item number, agency, title,
  23. survey number, and survey date.  All SuDoc classes listed in the LIST OF
  24. CLASSES... is in the database regardless of UCR's selection decisions.  Each
  25. record also contains other fields to indicate local selection, housing, or
  26. other processing related information or instructions.

  28. At UCR, the database is being used in an interactive mode for all U.S.
  29. depository processing activities through programs written in dBASE language.
  30. The database also serves as a key element in UCR's recently developed
  31. Automated Shipping List Processing and Shelflisting System which is described
  32. in the September 15, 1992 issue of the Administrative Notes, Readers Exchange
  33. Column.

  35. In response to requests, UCR has distributed over 200 copies of the database
  36. to depository libraries across the United States.   The database is available
  37. in dBASE III, dBASE IV, or ASCII format.
