- A local legislative representative is proposing that the state fund a computer
- for every teacher and student in the state (Iowa). He is proposing that
- the state fund a system that is designed for Iowa. Besides designing a
- system the proposal also recommends a way for parents to purchase the
- computers. One of the advantages cited is that a purchase this large
- will provide enough clout to dictate hardware and software design and price.
-
- I seem to recall a couple of systems that were "state or province" designed or
- mandated - The Acorn and Icon. I also seem to remember that Alaska
- Department of Ed was considering such a move.
-
- Can anyone tell me what happened to these systems? Were there other
- systems devleoped and did they succeed?
-
- Also, what is your opinion: a) state goals and funding to provide
- a computer for each student and teacher, b) state designed computers
- and software
-
- I like the idea of the state setting goals and providing funding but
- I have strong reservations about state designed systems.

- Please respond to directly at ws1971s@acad.drake.edu.
- I will try to summarize the response and repost. Thanks.
