  19. Dan Cummings from ORTTA. It tells about information
  20. including the NIH Guide available on Gopher.

  29.           ORTTA Bulletin Board Available Through Gopher
  30.  
  31. ORTTA has established an experimental Gopher Server to supply
  32. research information, deadlines, telephone numbers, and links to
  33. other useful information systems.  The Internet Gopher is a U of
  34. M developed product which provides a very flexible distributed
  35. information delivery system combining articles, searches, and
  36. seamless links to other gopher servers throughout the world.
  37. Users can review information on screen or easily copy items to
  38. their computer for other purposes.  Our gopher can be found
  39. directly at gopher.ortta.umn.edu or in the Departmental
  40. Information section of the CIS gopher server (gopher.tc.umn.edu).

  42. In addition to a mirror image of the information currently
  43. available on our AIS Public Access Bulletin Board, the new Gopher
  44. server provides links to Gopher servers at NIH and NSF and a
  45. telnet link to the NSF STIS system.  Over the next few months,
  46. the gopher server will become more streamlined as we link users
  47. directly to source data rather than rehashing articles.  Search
  48. capabilities on our Gopher are currently unavailable but will be
  49. added shortly.  (As soon as we get a UNIX box, or the search
  50. engine is ported to DOS, or some kind soul out there gives us a
  51. few cycles on their system to do indexing!!!)

  53. For more information on the Gopher system or information on
  54. accessing the campus computer network, please call the
  55. Microcomputer Help Line at 626-4276. Please email your comments
  56. and suggestions about this new service to gopher@ortta.umn.edu.
  57. Also, if you know of other gopher servers or terminal-based
  58. services that are particularly useful to researchers or research
  59. administrators, please let us know so that we can include them
  60. and make a "one-stop-shop" for useful information pertaining to
  61. research on campus.

  63. One item of note:
  64.  
  65. The NIH Guide currently available under GUIDES/NIH Guide is a
  66. version that we receive via e-mail and then manipulate into a
  67. more useful form.  By popular demand, we have made it available
  68. in two ways:  A "full text" version which is the entire guide
  69. just as we receive it, and a "reader version" which is the same
  70. guide, split into sections to facilitate on-line viewing.
  71.  
  72. As you may notice, NIH is operating their own gopher server and
  73. you may ask why we don't simply point you there to read the
  74. Guide...well that would be much more efficient, but they have not
  75. yet made the Guide available through this service!  Evidently
  76. there is currently a project under way at the University of
  77. Wisconsin in cooperation with NIH to provide a nicely
  78. "gopherized" version of the guide with cross referencing and the
  79. like.  As soon as this comes available, we will likely point our
  80. NIH Guide item to that source.  Until then, we will continue to
  81. post the Guide as you see here.
