  74.         Information privacy is increasingly recognized as a
  75. critical issue with very difficult problems and divergent
  76. viewpoints.  This presentation will include an update on the
  77. status of the EC Privacy Directive and will provide an important
  78. foundation for the card technology presentations and work
  79. group meetings that follow.

  85.         This presentation and discussion will consider the
  86. growing (and unresolved) legal-technical issues in card
  87. technologies.  Forget about "signatures" - - "smart cards" and
  88. optical cards are geared to become commonplace (and often
  89. mandatory) as authenticators and record keepers, respectively,
  90. for diverse business and government purposes.  For example,
  91. patient health records are being placed on "portable data
  92. carriers" (optical cards), Denmark will launch the first nation-
  93. wide smart card for users to make phone calls, pay for public
  94. transportation, laundries, vending machines and parking
  95. meters; smart cards are anticipated to be mandatory for
  96. S.W.I.F.T. usage from the first quarter of 1994; universities are
  97. issuing smart cards as student IDs; corporate ID cards are
  98. moving towards smart cards; material data safety information
  99. is capable of transfer via cards; bank cards in France use
  100. microchips rather than magnetic stripes; and health insurance
  101. and HMOs have ambitious plans to introduce smart and optical
  102. card technologies.

  129. and Authentication Requirements with Today's Technology

  131.         This presentation and discussion will consider legal
  132. approaches to the development of workable rules for
  133. authentication and the accomodation of signature attributes
  134. within an electronic commerce environment.  This session will
  135. consider and seek to integrate the pertinent formalistic and
  136. evidentiary issues.  Special consideration will be given to the
  137. requirements of global data networks and open systems and
  138. open trading environments.  Additionally, attention will be
  139. given to security requirements within Financial EDI
  140. applications.
