  12.                To   determine   the  effectiveness   of   Activism  through
  13.           networking,  I sent  out  a  survey   to  all the  recipients  of
  14.           Biosphere.  Here is the survey, along with the results:

  22.           1.  How do you have access to Biosphere?
  23.  
  24.                -76.5% have  access through  the university, of  that 76.5%,
  25.                38%   were  students,  23.5%   university  staff,   and  15%
  26.                professors
  27.                -23.5% have access through another source
  28.  
  29.           2.  Sex?
  30.                -62% males, 38% females
  31.  
  32.           3.  Age group?
  33.                -38% thirties, 32% twenties, 18% forties, 9% over fifty, and
  34.                3% under twenty
  35.  
  36.           4a)   Were  you   an  activist/environmentalist   before  joining
  37.           Biosphere?
  38.  
  39.                -97% are active/environmental,  of that,  91% are active and
  40.                6% are environmental but non-active
  41.                -3% were neither environmental or active

  43.            b) If no to 4a), have you  joined any environmental groups since
  44.                joining  Biosphere, or  made  changes in  your lifestyle  to
  45.           become more environmentally friendly?

  47.                -of  the  3% that  answered no  to  4a), none  had  made any
  48.                lifestyle changes

  50.            c)  If yes  to 4a), do  you find  Biosphere useful  for bringing
  51.           about     change?

  53.                -44% said yes, 28% said no, 16% don't know and 12% said
  54.                sometimes

  56.           5.    Do you  find Biosphere  to be  a  better source  of current
  57.           information   than  your  local  newspaper,  T.V.  or  magazines?
  58.           (resounding yes, somewhat, or no)
  59.                -41%  resounding yes, 32% somewhat,  24% no, and 3% not sure
  60.                yet

  62.           Conclusion- Biosphere is reaching people of all age groups and of
  63.           both sexes.

  65.                From  these results   one might  conclude that  Biosphere is
  66.           useful in  bringing about progressive change,  many answering yes
  67.           to 4a) and 5.
  68.                However,   an  overwhelming  majority,   97%,  were  already
  69.           "converted".  Of  those  that  weren't, none  had  made  positive
  70.           changes.

  72.           Your Comments
  73.                -Biosphere provides an important variety of perspectives.
  74.                -Biosphere  is not  localized  enough;it only  informs on  a
  75.                national and worldwide level, mostly U.S. based.
  76.                -There is too much philosophizing.
  77.                -Biosphere has the potential to bring about change, although
  78.                it hasn't yet.
  79.                -The object  of Biosphere is  not for  basic information  or
  80.                change.
  81.                -Biosphere invites  free riders  and passive users,  who may
  82.                not be all that interested in becoming active.

  84.                I  was   speechless  as  I  read   responses  from  Austria,
  85.           Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S.  I was filled
  86.           with hope, for there is so much  potential to bring about change,
  87.           by  synchronizing  world  wide   events-    perhaps  a  worldwide
  88.           pesticide  protest  day,  provided  that  most  of  us belong  to
  89.           activist groups.

  91.                I  apologize  for  the  vagueness  in  the  wording  of  the
  92.           questions.   I was  attempting to  make the  survey as  short and
  93.           direct to the point as possible.   I thank all of those  who took
  94.           the time  to respond to the  survey.  Please mail  me any further
