- Hmmm... We had a couple of dozen Archive 150s drives before we went to DAT
- and as I recall, we tried some of the 6250 tapes and had no problems. When
- choosing a drive or tape combination for a VINES server, keep one thing in
- mind (as long as the drive works with VINES!); the VINES backup/restore
- program is VERY primative (whole other thread on that...). When backing up,
- "bantape" (the VINES backup program) will keep dumping/reading data until
- the controller sends and End of Tape signal. What this means is regardless
- of the drive/tape combination, bantape has no idea of the tape capacity and
- will act based on the response of the SCSI adapter. Unfortunatly, there are
- some tape drives that are an exception to the rule either because their
- BIOS enforces a maximum tape size or other wierd quirks.
-
- All in all, I've seen no problem with the Archive 150s with an Adaptec
- 15xx/17xx controller when using extended tapes. If you are using the
- Banyan supplied tape controller (IB02??), I'm not sure of the results.
-
- Interesting note: When we obtained our original backup system (IB02/
- Archive 150s) from Banyan, the cost was ~$2500. After I was able to stand
- up again after bending over, I found that both Archive and Emulex (IB02)
- were within a mile of our site. Total cost for each system from them came
- to around $700. At $1800 for handling and shipping, I'd give up my job
- any day!!!
