  21. No.  I got that number from a email by Ellen Fletcher (fletchere@aol.com).
  22. The exact message ID was <9206062307.tn11543@aol.com>.  She was quoting
  23. the minutes of the May 27th Santa Clara Transportation Commision meeting.
  24. To paraphrase: most disel locomotives polute as much as 600 or 800 cars.
  25. Very modern ones polute as much as 400 cars.  I believe the original
  26. source of the information was the California Transportation Commision.
  27. That message implied that electric locos poluted less, but gave no
  28. numbers.

  30. BTW: Someone else asked where I got the ~3% of the population uses
  31. mass transit to commute number.  I believe this is from the 1990
  32. census (sp?).
