  19.     based on their ability/qualifications alone.  BUT the
  20.     education system today is not set up to permit trashing
  21.     AA programs just yet.  for example, a great number of
  22.     female students disdain math/science from an early age.
  23.     some studies suggest this is due in part to classroom
  24.     participation or lack thereof...  minorities consistently
  25.     score lower on *standardized* tests... why is this??
  26.     many hypotheses but no real answers or solutions have
  27.     been put forth.  until we revamp the education system,
  28.     particularly K-12, we will need AA programs to give people
  29.     with disparate backgrounds a fighting chance to prove 
  30.     themselves.  i understand that this is done to the detriment
  31.     of the *white male*; this is unfortunate.  BUT, we
  32.     are not yet to the point where we can say every child is
  33.     getting an adequate education.
