  40. I believe that was the sense of Johnson's statement, i.e., scoundrels try
  41. every way to take advantage of everybody else, but if those means fail, they
  42. mouth patriotic proclamations and/or become politicians -- an especially
  43. deceitful way to get rich while appearing to spread healthy pride in their
  44. nation.  A scoundrel like Joseph McCarthy could wield sweeping malevolent
  45. power by claiming his witch hunts were motivated by love of the nation.
