- I believe that was the sense of Johnson's statement, i.e., scoundrels try
- every way to take advantage of everybody else, but if those means fail, they
- mouth patriotic proclamations and/or become politicians -- an especially
- deceitful way to get rich while appearing to spread healthy pride in their
- nation. A scoundrel like Joseph McCarthy could wield sweeping malevolent
- power by claiming his witch hunts were motivated by love of the nation.
