  15. ALBERTA NATIVES LOOK
  16. FORWARD TO WINDPOWER

  18. Native residents of the Peigan Indian Reserve near Lethbridge,
  19. Alberta, are anticipating a major economic windfall from a windfarm
  20. to be built on their property next year, according to the Financial
  21. Times of Canada.

  23. The 2,200 members of the Peigan band expect to realize Cdn $1
  24. million (US $850,000) each year from the sale of electric power
  25. from the 9.9-MW facility.  In addition, natives will be employed in
  26. building and operating the project.

  28. Wind studies of the area, the article said, indicate that it
  29. exceeds California's Altamont Pass, one of the largest
  30. concentrations of windpower in the world, in wind energy potential.

  32. The Peigan project is partially funded with money from the
  33. Southwest Alberta Renewable Energy Initiative (SWAREI).  However,
  34. the bulk of the funds for the $17-million project will come from
  35. the Peigans and their investors.

  37. The windfarm will be built by a Calgary firm, Wind Power, Inc.
