- Of course, I was speaking of television as an usurper of genuine
- individuality and diversity, in general, not this program in
- particular. A few drops of water in a wasteland still does not mean
- that one should not think of relocating oneself to a climate more
- favorable to growth, however. I think many instinctively realize
- the nature of the medium as inimicable to many positive aspects
- of human psychology, but perhaps for those who have come to take it
- for granted, and therefore benign, another reading of McLuhan's
- The Medium is the Message might be in order.

- It is no doubt useful to have natives involved in film and TV as actors
- and producers and directors. That doesn't change the nature of the
- medium, its drawbacks that are intrinsic, nor its essential role in
- the modern entertainment culture. For those who are tempted to become
- watchers, with all the attendant transformations that take place, it
- would be better overall to avoid drinking too deeply.
-
- The Bay Area, with all its wonderful and valuable individuals, is still
- subject to the same tendency in modern America, probably more so, to
- confuse fantasy with reality. It's too bad that the early American
- realization, that all men are created equal in the Creator's eyes, has
- been bastardized by the consumer TV culture to mean that all men's
- dreams should become the same. MAybe for Californian intellectuals,
- a better assessment is found in Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust,
- where the beliefs and myths that motivated individuals, often secretly
- and powerfully, have become trivia in the headlines of discarded
- movie fan magazines.
-
- I know that the pressures are tremendous to simply become another
- minor entry in the vaudeville show of imperial American consumerist
- multiculturalism, but what pithy observation about it all might
- Chief Seattle make?
