  25. are essentially secret societies with fairly extensive initiation/grade
  26. requirements. For the few times the rites are performed in a temple before
  27. a congregation ALL present are prepared for the symbolism by knowing the
  28. philosophy behind it.

  51. That depends upon the group.  Yes, in most groups I think you're correct,
  52. but in 'left-handed' tantric paths there is sometimes practiced a sort
  53. of 'random sexuality' in order to break our attachments to certain people
  54. and certain relationships.  This brings up the infamous situations of
  55. ritual incest and the like.

  61. are a form of mind control over the members....not in keeping with any
  62. set of philosophy or codes.

  67. I didn't interpret it this way.  I see how such shocking practices
  68. could be turned, by unscrupulous and oppressive organizations, into
  69. 'brainwashing techniques', where it would be followed up with very
  70. intense programming.

  72. However, there is a very important philosophy behind some practices of
  73. this type, as I mentioned above.  The idea is to break our traditional
  74. cultural programming through challenges to our insecurities and the
  75. direct practice of activities which our society considers 'taboo'
  76. but isn't really intended to harm anyone (like listening to or watching
  77. ANYBODY make love, let alone our own lovers).

  89. strange and repugnant...but over time gays have received more acceptance
  90. into the community of man than before.

  92. As well, I'm sure Eastern religions were looked down on with disdain but
  93. again over time they gained increasing acceptance in Western Society...and
  94. there is no difference in the relationship of, say Hinduism to Christianity
  95. than Paganism to Christianity. Over time Paganism will gain greater
  96. acceptance and tolerance in society.

  99. obscure cults...

  105. practice or appearance which doesn't affect them adversely is largely
  106. irrelevant and is not an important reason to condemn or criticize.

  109. and here you categorize someone's practices (on the information you've
  110. presented to us?) as 'lurid tales of sexual brainwashing by obscure
  111. cults'.

  113. I suggest that there is much more overlap between Satanism and Paganism
  114. than may be apparent (followups to alt.satanism and/or alt.paganism
  115. where Pagans will become VERY upset at such a suggestion) and that
  116. without additional information about this group and its practice we
  117. cannot really make a fair judgement about whether or not they are
  118. either 'obscure' or 'brainwashing people'.  Perhaps you can help me
  119. to understand you more by telling me how you'd answer these questions:
