  29. Slippery word, "power."  Thyagi's probably right that the largest number 
  30. of people who get involved in magic do so for reasons that add up to
  31. "I want power."  That little phrase, though, might mean any of a number
  32. of things.

  34. Some people use it to mean "control" -- whether of self, of surroundings,
  35. or of others.  Others seem to mean something more like significance of
  36. action, the ability to have some meaningful effect on any of these things.
  37. And then -- well, when I got involved in magic, I would have used the
  38. same phrase, or some variant of it, but with another meaning entirely.
  39. As if I were an electrical appliance, turned off, trying to find its own
  40. "on" switch.  My desire was to be in contact with power, not to make
  41. any particular use of it...
