  19. It's not even that.  It's actually more of a Persian invention, coming to 
  20. Christianity through the Gnostics.  And despite its attempts to resist, the 
  21. early Christian church ended up absorbing a fair number of Gnostic ideas, 
  22. especially ones concerning good & evil, and whether or not the earth is 
  23. fundamentally an evil place.  Unfortunately, while the older branches of 
  24. Christianity have pretty much shaken this off, this thought-virus keeps 
  25. popping up again in newer sects.  Presumably this is because it's such an 
  26. attractively simple idea, and lets people pretend that they don't have to 
  27. grapple with all-to-complex reality.
