- It's not even that. It's actually more of a Persian invention, coming to
- Christianity through the Gnostics. And despite its attempts to resist, the
- early Christian church ended up absorbing a fair number of Gnostic ideas,
- especially ones concerning good & evil, and whether or not the earth is
- fundamentally an evil place. Unfortunately, while the older branches of
- Christianity have pretty much shaken this off, this thought-virus keeps
- popping up again in newer sects. Presumably this is because it's such an
- attractively simple idea, and lets people pretend that they don't have to
- grapple with all-to-complex reality.
