- We think the world-wide web (WWW) is really neat.
-
- For those even more uninformed than me,
- World Wide Web (WWW) is a hypertext project which seeks to build a
- world wide network of hypertext links. There are several different
- browsers for this system including a simple tty interface. For a
- demo of the terminal browsers for WWW, telnet to the following sites:
-
- telnet info.cern.ch or telnet 128.141.201.74 (SWISS)
- telnet eies2.njit.edu or telnet 128.235.1.43 (USA [NJ])
- telnet vms.huji.ac.il or telnet 128.139.4.3 (ISRAEL)
- telnet info.funet.fi or telnet 128.214.6.100 (FINLAND)
-
- and login as "www"
-
- It can front-end Gopher and WAIS clients, and it works. Please email me
- or post if you think you know of serious problems or show stoppers with
- this technology. (Or of something better that has similar, public roots.)
-
- Anyway, I have written a program that can convert formatted manpages
- into HTML (hypertext markup language). It gets most of the
- references to other manpages and makes them into WWW-compliant hypertext
- links. It also can mark up boldface, italic and bold-italic.
- Could someone tell me the SGML codes for those formats, and whether any of the
- WWW clients make use of them? I will post it after it gets a bit farther.
-
- Also, we currently have a wimpy V.42bis Internet link, so running the
- local clients is painfully slow. I would like to modify a client to
- save copies of the nodes locally when they're pulled down. A
- modification to WWW's hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) to support the
- querying the modification time, or equivalent, of a node, would be great
- for us but possibly of good, general use as node sizes grow as
- multimedia components are added.
