- I am guessing that your car has power steering. On the early Mustang,
- this is implemented by a power cylinder attached to the drag link that
- runs between the tie rods on either side. A piston rod comes out of this
- cylinder, and its end is attached to a bracket bolted to the left frame
- rail of the car, at about where the front edge of the door. The cylinder
- provides the power assist by piston pushing or pulling against the bracket.
- The bracket is sort of T shaped, with the leg of the T bolted from under
- the frame rail, and one arm of the T bolted through the side of the frame.
- The other arm of the T has a single hole into which the piston rod is
- bolted through rubber bushings. (The whole assembly is a rather lousy
- design and is prone to slop and leakage.)
-
- Some headers may interfere with the piston rod using the stock mounting
- set up. Some of the aftermarket companies know this, and sell a T bracket
- with a much longer arm on which the piston rod bolts to. This lowers the
- rod by 1 to 2 inches at the frame rail side, helping clear headers that
- would otherwise contact the power cylinder and rod assembly.
-
- I have many times looked into replacing the entire set up with a rack and
- pinion from a late-model car. But this would require a lot of custom
- fabrication, which I do not have the skill or resources to perform.
- I heard about someone doing this already, and is actually marketing a
- kit, but I didn't get enough information about it to pursue it. Anyone
- with such details is welcome to comment.
