- Many names in the Dutch version have been translated -- in fact all English
- sounding names have become Dutch sounding names. This has been done by the
- translator in coordination with Tolkien. I think it is a good thing that the
- names are translated, since this transfer more of the feeling of the original
- to the Dutch. It would have been a bit alienising if we had to read English
- names.
-
- Some names:
-
- The Shire De Gouw
- Bilbo Balings Bilbo Baggins.
- Merijn Merry
- Pepijn Pippin
- Rivendel Rivendell (change in spelling)
- Boombaard Treebeard
- Boer van der Made Farmer Maggot
- Toek Took (change in spelling)
-
- etc. I don't know the English names as good as the Dutch names, since I have
- read LotR several times in Dutch and only once in English.
-
- In the biography, it is said that for the Polish edition, Tolkien provided the
- 'original' Westron. Can somebody post them?
-
- P.S. if somebody has time it would be nice to have a full list of translations
- from Dutch to English and vice versa.
