  10. LEGAL--California will enact the proposal of the Legal Reform Working Group,
  11. which will re-write all California state laws in a formal description
  12. language.  Massachusetts will pass a similar act later the next year,
  13. except the two laws will be incompatible;  California will have a
  14. bottom-up syntax, while Mass. will be top-down.

  16. PRISONS--a single mega-prison will be constructed in the Nevada wasteland
  17. for cost-effective housing of federal prisoners.  It will be a model of
  18. modern technology, including both passive and photovoltaic solar technology.

  20. CULTURE--a man in Berkeley, CA, will sue the state of California to allow
  21. him to legally marry his cat.  The state will not contest this, on the grounds
  22. that any effort in that direction would cost the state funds which can be
  23. better used elsewhere.

  25. ROYALS--Queen Elizabeth will direct the line of succession away from the
  26. House of Windsor.  The designated heir apparent will be a program named
  27. "Rex 2.0" developed at Manchester University.  This program incorporates
  28. all of the knowledge downloaded from the existing queen during 5 years
  29. of careful interrogation.

  31. MATERIALS--during 1993, a breakthrough material invented in 1991 will be
  32. revealed.  It is aerogel-filled aircraft honeycomb, a material only 5%
  33. heavier than standard honeycomb, but more than 2X stronger.

  35. PRESIDENCY--a 13-year-old kid with a scanner for cellular telephone
  36. frequencies will save the life of President Clinton, by revealing an
  37. assassination plot.  He will receive the Medal of Freedom in 1994.

  39. ENERGY--a steam car will win the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, for the first time
  40. in nearly 75 years.  This car will take advantage of a steam engine's
  41. rapid spool-up and spool-down capability.

  43. SILICON VALLEY--Apple Computer will build a monorail to connect its
  44. various buildings in Cupertino.  The total construction cost will be
  45. less than $1 million, thanks to heavy use of AutoCAD software.
  46. Custom components for the system will be manufactured by the same
  47. flexible manufacturing facility used for producing Macintoshes, simply
  48. by downloading the new design to the facility's computer.
