  13. I'm pretty ignorant about all these different formats - I haven't really
  14. got the big picture yet (Im still baffled why they need to do special
  15. things for video and sound, and don't just store them as ordinary files
  16. the way Acorn do with Replay CDs) - anyway, I'm about to write some
  17. code to read Sony Dataman disks on an ordinary drive.  Apparently, I'm
  18. told, I can only read 'old-style' disks on ordinary drives because the
  19. later disks are in 'XA' format, and I need a special XA controller
  20. card to read them.  Is this correct?  If so, why?  How did this new
  21. XA spec get through if you can't read the iso9660-compatible bits of
  22. the data?  Or can you?

  25. won't be offended by idiot-level descriptions of how it all fits
  26. together.
