  14. Nick is busy in the corner pounding on VAX.

  16. WHAT!!!!!

  18. Vax, except once to help move something in the Place, has not moved out
  19. of his corner in days - since Christmas. What?
  20.  
  21. "Why the heck are you just SITTING here, you dumb machine!" He shouts at
  22. the mobile vacuum cleaner. But it just tries to squirm out from his
  23. grip. Nick attacks with a screwdriver. He wants to get to the bottom of
  24. this malfunction before the glass-drifts begin to interfere with the
  25. fire.

  27. But an amazing thing happens! As soon as he starts turning the screw
  28. out, the driver slips and the screw WINDS BACK IN AGAIN! SHADES OF CLOSE
  29. ENCOUNTERS! Nick sits back in surprise with a loud KLASH!
  30.  
  31. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU ANIMATED BUMPER CAR! I HAVE TO FIX YOU!" He
  32. tries again, same result. He tries all 4 corners of the top cover. He
  33. actually gets one screw all the way out, and has to hide put it in his
  34. toolcase to keep Vax from retrieving it. (Where did Vax get the
  35. manipulator arm?! Curiouser and curiouser!). But then Vax moves away and
  36. Nick starts running after.

  38. "Wait, wait! Vax! Come back!"
  39.  
  40. Vax runs into the back room. Nick follows. Vax goes through the back
  41. door. Nick goes through the back door. Vax races through the snow to the
  42. front door and back into the room. Nick, slipping and sliding from the
  43. ice on his metal feet, manages to get in the front doorway just as the
  44. door slams back closed.

  47.    C R A S H !!!!!

  49. 3 or 4 patrons go to Nick's rescue. They carry him in, dazed, his nose
  50. bent out of shape. Literally. Nick's eyes stop rolling and focus on Vax.
  51. He is sitting quietly in the corner near the fire. Nick begins to get
  52. ANGRY! Just then......
