  17. "This morning, I was wondering what one could do to make this Xmas a 
  18. little more special. So I was reading the _San_Francisco_Chronicle_,
  19. and came across this article about letters to Santa Claus which ended
  20. up in the dead letter office of the SF post office. They're kept there
  21. so anyone can go in, read them and maybe reply to the gifts requested.

  23. "So... I went to the SFPO, and went to the DLO and looked through the
  24. letters. Some of them were quite funny, while some quite sad. One kid
  25. only wanted Santa Klaus to find her lost pet Shih-Tzu back, and all
  26. another wanted was for Santa to wake her up when he came so she could
  27. talk to him. Quite a number were really simple, asking for clothes,
  28. toys or dolls, though I think at least a quarter of the letters had
  29. requests for a Super NES system.... You should also see how the kids
  30. addressed their letters. 'Mr and Mrs Santa Claus, North Pole, 00000'.

  32. "Anyway, I picked up a letter from a woman who had simply sent in a list
  33. of six children, their ages ( from 2 to 12 ) and their sizes. The address 
  34. placed the house in one of the lower-income areas of town, so off I was
  35. headed to Fao Schwarz and a sporting goods store to get some gifts.
  36. I had some doubts, of course, and actually tried to look her up in the
  37. phone book and called up a person with the same name, but it wasn't her.
  38. I thought to myself "What if they're not that needy??", then thought again 
  39. "Maybe one shouldn't doubt so much. I don't think Santa does credit checks,
  40. does he???"

  42. "So now I'm at home, getting to ready to pack and gift-wrap a Gund bear
  43. and a SF 49ers cap. Big problem is, i don't have a car, and looks like
  44. this would-be Santa's gift is gonna be late. But I guess I had better try to
  45. get to a UPS station or try to find someone willling to loan me his
  46. car.... Nobody out there has a four-horse open sleigh, does one??? =)

  50. off to Mexico backpacking on the 27th, so if you want me to drop you
