- Bored? The troll was totally bored with school until he managed to
- get to the 7th grade. It didn't help that his mother absolutely
- refused to consider advanced classes or extra activities--her fears
- limited MY opportunities. (Grrrr)
-
- The Troll's sons, however, are allowed, nay encouraged, to work well above
- their abilities. The Troll and the Dragon Lady are of the opinion that
- minds need to be exercised just a bit past the point of pain. As the Wave
- put it yesterday, "sometimes a "hard" B is better than an "easy" A!".
-
- Of course, the problem is knowing the difference between challenge and total
- overload. The Troll's average in college, BTW, was MUCH higher than his
- High School grades. College, to me, was a lot more interesting and relevant--
- and, of course, the student deferment from the Viet Nam mess (tm) was a great
- motivator.
-
- Yeah, reading--I never have been able to read in a group. But I devoured
- all the library books I could carry as a kid. I remember begging for a trip
- to the library 3 times a week, buying tonnes of books, and still having too
- much time to be bored. Unfortunately, I still have this problem, as all
- of us read a lot. Books made up all too much of our cargo on this last move.
-
- Languages--unfortunately the Troll does not speak multiple languages fluently,
- but he does program fluently in far too many computer languages, and has a
- well-defined talent for languages. The rest of the gang is fairly multi-
- lingual. I think I am just lazy.
-
- Enough of this--to the rare teacher who can challenge the Troll's Children
- without feeling threatened when they pull away rapidly. These are the rare
- mentors that I seek!
-
- <Crash> (H'm I don't remember buying that drink--Mike, put that on my tab!)
-
- Crunch--The Troll, graceful as ever, takes a fall off the pile of soapboxes,
- gets up, and dusts himself off---
