- Recently, I posted a message that brought news of our Galaticomm BBS
- system being connected to the Internet. The response has been amazing! An
- incredible 812 new accounts have been created from users that logged
- onto the system through telnet in just two days. A flood of messages came
- in that indicated there was lots of confusion as to what that Galacticomm
- system could do. Because there were so many individual messages, I decided
- to answer the main bulk of the confusion here...
-
- First, let me explain that CNS is connected to the Internet via a
- dedicated T1 through 2 SUN systems: a SUN SPARC 10 and a SUN 3/280. You
- may check out these systems by loggin in as "new", using password "newuser".
- On these systems, we support telnet, ftp, irc, wais, gopher, uucp, slip,
- and point-to-point connections. We also support fax services, all
- newsgroups including the ClariNet, and national 800 service.
-
- We have connected to these SUN SYSTEMS a 486 running Galacticomm software.
- This system has 32 lines local to Colorado Springs coming in. If you log
- onto CNS with username "bbs", the system will connect you directly to this
- system. In a nutshell, we have provided telnet access to the BBS by
- connecting it to the Internet through our SUN systems. However, this did
- not change the fundamental limits of the Galaticom software: It does not
- support ftp, newsgroups, gopher, or most any other Internet feature. To
- experience that, you must log into our UNIX system.
-
- Having said that, most of you our there already have access to all those
- Internet features. Logging onto a local BBS where the majority of users
- don't even know what Internet is makes for an interesting mix of people.
- The users on the BBS system are amazed to be talking live with someone
- far away... this is something that Internet users take for granted. The
- BBS has over 2000 active local users, very few of which understand the
- Internet. In fact, many are novice users of computers.. this is why the
- menus may be more explicit that what you may be used to.
-
- Anyway, I hope that this served to clarify some things..
