- i forgot to make explicit that i draw in the wilds, far from electrical outlets
- and computers. sometimes i am working by hanging from a tree overlooking a
- swift flowing river. othertimes i am stuck in muck in a swamp with snakes
- circling my snakeboots as i draw.
-
- i have used a mac to draw curved staves when i am caught indoors. i draw one
- curved line and then specify vertical distance to reiterate that curve to
- create five lines. the results lack the interior resonance of how such lines
- blend when drawn by five points held together. using a mac confines me to the
- indoors and it restricts my use of papers.
-
- i am using a wide variety of papers including papers made from scraps i mash
- into funny shapes myself. thus i am trying to find ways of creating five lines
- in the field with a hand held stylus or contraption of some sort.
-
- the music i am drawing is handed over to a composer and musician ray brooks. he
- is adding time notations and instrumentation. it is a method of composing which
- resembles a game of ping pong or tennis. i do something. he adds a twist. i up
- the ante. eventually our compositions will be performed with me doing my comic
- banter and slap stick introductions to our music. we have composed music together
- before using a different method of composition. i would write a poem or phrase
- and he would analyse its inflections and intonations to build a melody. we
- did a review entitled nothing contrary to science or nature with songs written
- that way. but now we want to try a more visual approach, bypassing verbal
- patterns to generate melodies and rhythms found by looking at nature. we have
- no idea what we will come up with.
- i appreciate the e-mail replies to my last posting. i will let you all
- know when i find a pen or technical solution which works. and i will
- reply privately to all the folks who have written me.
