- So there I was, la-dee-dah, wandering through fields of unharvested
- causality. All around me tall stalks of cause-and-effect chains grew
- up out of the ground at the speed of light, asymptotically approaching
- a final height of approximately one elephant's eye.
-
- I plucked one and started to nibble on it. At its root was a young man
- agreeing to go to a bar with his friends. And at the tip he looked into
- the eyes of his wife of twenty years, whom he had first met there. The
- stalk was sweet and the flow of one event to another was smooth and creamy.
- I hoped this was indicative of a good harvest.
-
- Further down I found a nest of aphids, eating a bunch of plants from
- the ground up and leaving many events with no discernible history.
- Someone was going to be very confused when she suddenly found herself
- vice-president of a major corporation, without any particular reason to
- believe she had ever been born. I crushed the insects.
-
- As I wiped the bug goo from my shoes I heard an evil laugh behind me.
- I turned and saw the owner of the oblivion farm down the road. He and
- I had been in competition for some time, since our crops are in some
- sense mutually exclusive.
-
- I saw him point to one stalk, then reach over and grab it. He ran his
- hand right to the end, and then twisted the tip slowly around his index
- finger. The end touched a point in the middle.
-
- So there I was, la-dee-dah.
