- Not surprising, since the Lutheran church *IS* catholic. Luther didn't
- institute major changes in the church, he simply modified them to be more
- in line with (his) biblical understanding.

- Luther never intended to form a new church, he wanted to reform the Roman
- church. If the pope had given in on indulgences ("license to sin"), the
- Reformation would likely have been averted, at least for that time.
- Political motives were the genesis for the full split. Certain German
- politicians wanted to break with Rome and Luther was the perfect vehicle.

- Interesting...I find many fewer fundie types in the ELCA...not surprising,
- since the ELCA ordains women and believes in open communion. ELCA is much
- more liberal than Misouri Synod...
