- Interesting. Hm.... When Mom was studying for her Master's in
- American History, she commented that the Puritans believed that a
- woman couldn't/wouldn't lie about the father of the child while giving
- birth to it, and would often make him support her and the child based
- on her word at that point alone. And that sometimes/a lot of the time
- the mother took advantage of this by naming someone who was
- financially able to support her and her child.
