- Alicia,
-
- You've certainly touched on an idea that many of us probably underutilize
- in our research. (Perhaps a number of genealogists already use this
- technique without thinking twice about it, and perhaps it just isn't
- discussed as often as it should be!)
-
- It seems to me that this is also somewhat related to naming patterns where
- a son is given his mother's maiden name as a middle name. This is
- particularly helpful when the maiden name is unusual, but much less helpful
- when the maiden name is difficult to distinguish from a common first name
- (such as my own middle name, Martin, which is my mother's maiden name).
-
- Alicia, you asked about statistical studies and such about the historical
- usage of first names. I have a large paparback at home (of the type used
- to help name a baby) which discusses each first name in terms of how
- the name has risen or fallen in popularity in England or the U.S., going
- back at least to the early 1900's and sometimes before.
-
- I would imagine that many names (and name combinations) gained popularity
- as a result of famous people. My grandfather was named George Washington
- Martin, for instance. And my Smith line has a number of Thomas Jefferson
- Davis' in it. These patterns are also clues to being related. Once
- movies came along, I suspect that first name popularity was driven primarily
- by famous entertainers.
-
- Speaking of "marker names" (a good term which reminds me of a "genetic
- marker"), I've run across the name Greenberry in one of my lines. Does
- anyone know the history behind that one?

- P.S. Alicia, one of these days, I'll make it back for a SIGUCCS conference!
