- Yes, something like this has been done in the soc.roots newsgroup, although for
- genealogical searching, not adoption searching. People post articles on
- whatever topic, and include in their signatures a list of the surnames they are
- researching. People posting to alt.adoption could include in their signatures
- a summary like the one you describe, regardless of the topic of the article
- they're posting.

- I would propose writing dates as YY-MM-DD so people on both sides of the
- Atlantic would read them the right way, without having to know about the
- standard in advance. I believe that both Americans and Europeans would figure
- out this format the correct way.

- The soc.roots newsgroup also has a kind of registry for people researching
- different surnames. An adoption registry handled through Usenet would have the
- advantage of easy search and updating, and more importantly be free of charge.
- But would it be unnecessary duplication of existing efforts?
