  10. REACHING FOR THE STARS

  12. A free, nationwide distance-learning program designed to  
  13. encourage young minority and female middle and high-school  
  14. students to pursue careers in science and engineering
  15.

  24. Program Description:                
  25. Each of the 30-minute programs in the five-part interactive series  
  26. will profile a different recipient of a Virginia Space Grant 
  27. scholarship or  fellowship.  These  young minority and female 
  28. researchers will describe what  motivated them to  pursue careers 
  29. in the sciences and engineering, what their lives are  like at the  
  30. college or university where they study, and what their career  
  31. aspirations are.   Each researcher will also teach a basic science 
  32. lesson and briefly  discuss the  relationship of that science lesson to 
  33. their university research  project.  Viewers  will have the 
  34. opportunity to ask questions of the young researchers  via 
  35. telephone  during an interactive segment of the program.  Pre- and 
  36. post- broadcast material  will be mailed to those registering for the 
  37. series.

  39. Target Audience:  Middle school and high school students and  
  40. other interested viewers
  41.  
  42. Program Objectives:
  43.  
  44. The series is designed to provide viewers with:
  45.  
  46. - An awareness of the career possibilities and rewards that exist for  
  47. students --   particularly minorities and women -- in engineering 
  48. and the  sciences.
  49.  
  50. - A knowledge of the scholastic paths students must travel to  
  51. become engineers  and scientists.
  52.  
  53. - An understanding of the nature of five young minority and  
  54. female researchers'  college experiences and what viewers will 
  55. encounter if they attend  college and  major in the sciences.
  56.  
  57. - Knowledge of five basic science lessons and how those lessons are  
  58. related to  more sophisticated research.
  59.  
  60. Reaching for the Stars is a cooperative educational project of the  
  61. Virginia Space  Grant Consortium, Old Dominion University and 
  62. the National  Aeronautics  and Space Administration.
