  22. I've never heard either formulation before, and they sound illiterate
  23. to me.  "Anyone" and "one" are clearly singular.  "They", "themselves",
  24. "them", and "their" are clearly plural.

  26. It is incorrect (and ad hominem) to allege that people dislike making
  27. a hash of agreement as to number merely because of staunch grammatical
  28. fundamentalism and resistance to change per se.  Rather, many oppose it
  29. on grounds of _taste and a desire for clarity_.

  31. The protestation that permitting change to the language is good merely
  32. begs the self-evident question of _what_ change is good.  It also raises
  33. a second obvious question (if one grants your bandwagon rhetoric about
  34. _this_ change being already underway), of whether the same reasoning
  35. supports a movement to _change it back_, on the aforementioned grounds
  36. of taste and clarity.

  38. If the change _is_ enacted, (1) people who urged it will congratulate
  39. themselves on how progressive they are, (2) there will be widespread
  40. confusion between singular and plural in English-language references,
  41. since the meaning of they/them/their will then be rendered unclear, and
  42. (3) sexism will not, in unvarnished reality, have been impeded one
  43. whit, any more than it is by the gender-neutral pronoun in Turkish.
