- Hi Folks,
-
- I need a little help, and I was hoping that you could offer some
- suggestions. I'm writing a paper on the ethical decision of when to
- accept a client with multiple issues when the therapist is not trained in
- all of the issues. I know that this happens quite frequently, because
- most clients do have multiple issues and therapists do not have specialized
- training in everything.
-
- For example, a client comes in with a history of sexual abuse they
- have just discovered, and as a side effect of that they are now dealing
- with an eating disorder and substance abuse. The counselor is trained in
- sexual abuse, and substance abuse but has never had any training in
- eating disorders. There is the ethical decision....does the therapist accept
- this client, or do they refer the client to another therapist with more
- training in all of those fields?
-
- I am looking for help in three places. First, I would like to get you
- input (you being sci.psychology) on what you think the ethics are concerning
- this issue. Mail, or post.
-
- Second, I am looking for literature specifically concerning this
- ethical issue. Journal entries, books, any suggestions would be
- appreciated.
-
- Third, I am looking for personal experiences from either side of the
- therapeutic relationship. Either a case that you had where you had to make
- this decision and it was specifically difficult for some reason. Or when
- you were refered out to another therapist with a reason given.
-
- On the third part here, there is a possibility I would use the
- information in my paper. Confidentiality would defiantly be used. Names
- would be changed, etc. And please protect yourself, and change your
- client's name for me, or the therapist name, so that confidentiality will
- not be broken.
-
- I thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
