  22. The University of Georgia is pleased to announce the availability of an
  23. Assistant Research Scientist position to support campus computational
  24. physics research activities.  The position will be situated within the
  25. Specialized Systems Support Group of the University Computing and
  26. Networking Services office.  The primary responsibility of the person
  27. in this position will be assisting and collaborating with research faculty
  28. in physics in effectively exploiting advanced computing architectures and
  29. methods in their research endeavors.

  31. Applicants for this position must have expertise and demonstrated research
  32. accomplishments in the application of parallel computing methods to the
  33. numerical simulation of phenomena and properties in a variety of physical
  34. systems.  Experience in applying parallel computational techniques to areas
  35. such as nuclear reaction studies, phonon dynamics, and plasma processes is
  36. also highly desirable.  Applicants must hold the terminal academic degree
  37. awarded in their discipline area.  Preference will be given to those
  38. candidates with experience in the design and successful implementation of
  39. Monte Carlo simulational algorithms in a hierarchial client/server
  40. computing environment.

  42. Applicants will be evaluated on their perceived ability to contribute to
  43. established research programs within the University, knowledge and
  44. experience in parallel computing methods within their research speciality,
  45. experience in the design and implementation of complex software systems,
  46. and demonstrated abiltity to develop and maintain collaborative working
  47. relationships with academic researchers and other professional staff.

  49. Computing facilities currently used in computational physics research at
  50. the University of Georgia include an IBM ES9000 Model 720 with six vector
  51. facilities, a cluster of IBM RISC System/6000 servers, a Silicon Graphics
  52. visualization center, a variety of UNIX scientific workstations, and a
  53. diversity of personal computers.  These systems are all attached to a
  54. campus Ethernet TCP/IP network which in turn is connected to the Internet.
  55. The IBM ES9000 and RISC System/6000 systems are operated as a shared and
  56. hierarchical collection of compute servers under AIX.

  58. The salary level for this position will be determined by the experience and
  59. qualifications of the selected candidate.  This is not a tenure track
  60. position but carries faculty status.  Advancement is possible based on
  61. performance.
