- The University of Georgia is pleased to announce the availability of an
- Assistant Research Scientist position to support campus computational
- physics research activities. The position will be situated within the
- Specialized Systems Support Group of the University Computing and
- Networking Services office. The primary responsibility of the person
- in this position will be assisting and collaborating with research faculty
- in physics in effectively exploiting advanced computing architectures and
- methods in their research endeavors.

- Applicants for this position must have expertise and demonstrated research
- accomplishments in the application of parallel computing methods to the
- numerical simulation of phenomena and properties in a variety of physical
- systems. Experience in applying parallel computational techniques to areas
- such as nuclear reaction studies, phonon dynamics, and plasma processes is
- also highly desirable. Applicants must hold the terminal academic degree
- awarded in their discipline area. Preference will be given to those
- candidates with experience in the design and successful implementation of
- Monte Carlo simulational algorithms in a hierarchial client/server
- computing environment.

- Applicants will be evaluated on their perceived ability to contribute to
- established research programs within the University, knowledge and
- experience in parallel computing methods within their research speciality,
- experience in the design and implementation of complex software systems,
- and demonstrated abiltity to develop and maintain collaborative working
- relationships with academic researchers and other professional staff.

- Computing facilities currently used in computational physics research at
- the University of Georgia include an IBM ES9000 Model 720 with six vector
- facilities, a cluster of IBM RISC System/6000 servers, a Silicon Graphics
- visualization center, a variety of UNIX scientific workstations, and a
- diversity of personal computers. These systems are all attached to a
- campus Ethernet TCP/IP network which in turn is connected to the Internet.
- The IBM ES9000 and RISC System/6000 systems are operated as a shared and
- hierarchical collection of compute servers under AIX.

- The salary level for this position will be determined by the experience and
- qualifications of the selected candidate. This is not a tenure track
- position but carries faculty status. Advancement is possible based on
- performance.
