  17. Well, fat distribution is under hormonal control, and the particular
  18. fat distribution most women have (on the hips, rear and thighs,
  19. classically described as "gynoid") is facilitated in large part by
  20. estrogen.  Of course, compounds with some degree of activity as
  21. anti-estrogens are available (Tamoxifen, Clomid), but I think
  22. taking something like this that would be a little extreme, given
  23. that this is only "abnormal" culturally.  I also don't know whether
  24. such drugs would have any effect on fat distribution, for a number
  25. of reasons.

  27. There was a study done by George Bray at UCLA, a well-known obesity
  28. researcher, which looked at the effect of topical creams containing a
  29. mixture of adrenergic agents (essentially adrenalin-analogues and
  30. theophylline, a caffeine-like substance) on local fat distribution.
  31. Believe it or not, the cream appeared to work!  Women who were their
  32. own controls showed reductions in circumference on the treated thigh
  33. compared to the untreated thighs.  But I've never seen any followup on
  34. this work.  I don't know if it turned out that the study was bogus,
  35. couldn't be replicated, or whether this was just too wacky or National-
  36. Enquirer-like an idea to pursue any further.
