- In fact, the talk with the doctor should happen before asking the net.
- You're more likely to get up-to-date information that way. Usual dis-
- claimers, I'm only an rh- mother, ask your doctor first, etc.:
- a treatment has been developed to prevent the formation of maternal
- antibodies to rh+ blood. It consists of a shot in the derriere at
- 28 weeks of pregnancy, and then another one within 24 hours of delivery
- of an rh+ baby. Gamma globulin is the substance injected. RhoGam is
- one of its tradenames. Comes with a bonus: an attractive card to put
- in your wallet. ("I'm rh-, give me a shot of rhogam if I deliver/miscarry
- etc.")
-
- I can't remember the % incidence of rh incompatibility between
- mothers and fetuses, but apparently timely injections of RhoGam
- reduces the number to a very small figure.
