- UPDATED November 19th, 1992.
-
-
- A roughly put together survey regarding graduate student funding levels,
- conditions, and other stuff. This survey shows a great variety of situations
- which cannot be put into good or bad categories. If some of the facts are
- indeed not facts, please send me e-mail (hugh@engrg.uwo.ca), or if you want
- to be added, please send some e-mail.
-
- (Please Note: FIGURES WERE CONVERTED TO CANADIAN FUNDS USING THE FORMULA
- 1.0 $CDN = $0.8 $US, U.S. DOLLARS HAVE A 'us' IN FRONT,
- CANADIAN HAS A 'cdn' IN FRONT)
-
-
- Some factors to consider (probably wrong, and over generalized):
- - US students will have to support Health Insurance (avg us500),
- and health care costs are not deducted.
- - I believe Canadian taxes can be slightly higher (they include healthcare),
- but no tax is deducted from the figures given.
- - TA = Teaching Assistant
- - RA = Research Assistant
- - Tuition is tax deductable in canada, along with some living expenses
- - Scholarships can often discard all funding schemes, or might not make
- a difference depending upon the size.
- - Fees are always(?) higher for non-canadians in Canada, and in the US
- the fees are always(?) higher for out of state people.
- - Many full time grad students have restrictions on the number (or any)
- hours worked outside the department. This seems to be intended to
- focus the studies, but also limits other possible sources of income.
