- If you're shining a laser through 'pure' methanol and getting emission
- of light of a different colour than that from the laser, it's possible
- you're getting second harmonic generation-same as what's happening in
- the dye laser.
- Then again, it could be an impurity-from the container? You'd expect
- spectroscopic grade to be 'pure' in terms of what is deliberatly
- put into it, but it could be contaminated between the supplier and you.
- NB methylated spirits goes blue when mixed with water, maybe atmospheric
- moisture is being 'sucked' into your sample. Try superdrying it.
