- Why worry about the reserve being too big. When you get to the point
- that this is the chute you are using then the fun part of the jump is
- over and this is the parachute that saves your life. If you are happy
- with the container (Elite) then having a smaller reserve is just for
- looks more than anything. Nothing wrong with a bigger reserve as you may
- be in a place sometime that is quite high and you will be happy that you
- had the bigger chute. You are right about the main but I think that your
- instructor was thinking of your safety right now not about how fast you
- can fly a new main. Get some good practice with the new bigger main and
- then start to experiment with something smaller. Jump a few differnt
- ones to find out what you like. Jump the new mains in your own rig to
- see how they fit and feel and then make your decision. Keep away
- from borrowed gear that you are not familiar with as this is
- inviting problems and the mains may fit nicely in the rig you are
- jumping but may not be as nice in your own. The bigger one will give you
- better landings with more margin for error. Fifty jumps is not that many
- and it only takes one small mistake to break a few bones or worse. You
- will be able to sell the main to someone who is a beginner next season
- and get your jet if you wish then. Smaller chutes come down much faster
- than bigger ones and they look great as long as you are under full
- control. Boy they can sure hurt if you make a small correction too close
- to the ground and your flare is a little late or a little off. The Racer
- will take a smaller canopy and your rigger can make adjustments for the
- smaller main. Most guys up her including myself have bigger reserves
- than mains just for the reasons mentioned above. BOB!!
