- Indeed. I've actually read that in several sources. While it might
- seem counter-intuitive, it all depends on how you look at it. Example:
- how can running 5 miles @ 8 minutes a mile burn the same calories as
- walking 5 miles @ 12 minutes a mile? Consider a 170 lb individual
- covering those 5 miles. According to the formula, this person will burn
- ~625 calories. The runner burns them in 40 minutes. The walker burns
- them in an hour. The runner is burning ~940 calories an hour, compared
- to the walker's 625. The speed at which you travel affects the rate at
- which you burn the calories. If both people were to exercise for an
- hour, the runner would burn 315 more calories. As it is, the runner
- just finishes 20 minutes sooner for the same caloric output, because of
- the higher rate of effort.
