- Here's an easy one (actually I noticed this done incorrectly in a
- technical paper; a minor mistake but still . . .)

- Imagine a volume V composed of touching spheres each with radius R.
- Now imagine that same volume composed of spheres in the same geometrical
- arrangement, but of radius 0.5R. Assume that the lengths of the sides
- of the volume are much greater than the radii in question, and that
- surface effects are negligble. Does the packing fraction (volume of
- spheres/volume V) increase, stay the same, or decrease? I realize that
- this question is very easy if you plug numbers into equations, so can
- you give an explination in words that takes only geometry into
- consideration. Do the surface effects change the answer to the question
- above?

- P.S. Sorry if these types of questions seem pointless since it is so
- easy to plug numbers into equations and get the correct answer.
